Love Nature

Cooking Tools

When looking to eat healthy there are a few cooking tools I recommend to help you get the job done well. I think the key to healthy cooking is keeping foods as close to their natural form as possible. Less processing, fewer obscure ingredients, and quick meal prep are all important. Having too many appliances in the kitchen detracts from the natural form, texture, and flavors of foods. As a result, we get accustom to eating meals that no longer resemble their ingredients. Here is my list of cooking tools that help you prepare marvelous meals while still retaining the natural enjoyment that natures bounty has to offer.

Chef Knife

A chef knife is arguable the most important kitchen tool to own; you can’t do any meal prep without it. A sharp, well made blade like that from Zwilling J.A. Henckel or Wusthof will make meal prep easy AND fun.

One of the most basic and essential kitchen tools, the chef’s knife is a must have for anyone interesting in cooking at home. Chef knives are typically 8″ long however sometimes you can find ones at a fraction of the price if you are willing to accept a 7″ blade. When it comes to quality kitchen tools that last a lifetime, you get what you pay for. A good knife will make quick work of meal prep and, for me, has actually made it a pleasure to cook from home.

Garlic Press

This is one of my most used kitchen tools when cooking meals. Pealing and chopping garlic are a thing of the past with this amazing invention. As with the citrus press, the garlic press may be found second hand. And no, the two tools are not interchangeable (you can’t crush garlic in the citrus press).

Blender

Blenders are great for making smoothies, sauces, soups as well as milling grains. Blendtec and Vitamix are the only two companies I recommend and I highly encourage you to check out their refurbished/reconditioned section for “Like-New” products at a fraction of the price!

This is by far the most important kitchen tool on the list (besides the chef knife) and one you should own as soon as possible. No matter what diet you follow, fruits and vegetables need to be at the center of every meal. DIETARY GUIDELINES FOR AMERICANS, published every 5 years, recommend 18 to 25 cups of vegetables (not including beans) every week for individuals 19 to 50 years of age.  Please visit my FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS page for more information on the benefits of smoothies. Simply put, it is much easier to meet your fruit and vegetable intake every day with smoothies than to eat them in their whole form. Want to learn more about making smoothies? Where to find: BlenderBabes.com

Let’s face it, cheap blenders from the big box store aren’t going to cut it if you are looking to take your health to the next level. Do yourself a favor and buy a high quality blender. This site will help you choose the right blender for your needs, has great reviews, and a bunch of fun videos. definitely worth checking out. REFURBISHED BLENDTEC BLENDERS CERTIFIED RECONDITIONED VITAMIX BLENDERS If you are like me, you love a good blender, especially when they are on sale. DON’T EVER SPEND FULL PRICE ON A BLENDER. Buy the refurbished versions directly from the manufacturer. They come with great warrantees and arrive at your doorstep looking just like new. I have been the proud owner of several refurbished blenders and can’t say enough good things about them.

Food Processor

A chef knife is arguable the most important kitchen tool to own; you can’t do any meal prep without it. A sharp, well made blade like that from Zwilling J.A. Henckel or Wusthof will make meal prep easy AND fun.
I have only used a few food processors before but I have owned this model for about 7 years and it has never let me down. The blades come from the factory EXTREMELY sharp and to this day they are still VERY sharp. The 9 cup size is absolutely perfect for dishes such as: guacamole, hummus, shredded vegetables and coleslaws for salads, delicious salsas, and much more. This model has a very large sleeve and pusher assembly (the opening in the lid to fit items through while operating). This means large items can be shredded, mixed, or sliced with minimal prep work.
